Klamath Falls, Oregon is located in the south central region of Oregon and borders northern California. Klamath Falls sits on the southern shore of Upper Klamath Lake and is nestled in the Klamath Basin on the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountains. Klamath Falls, the City of Sunshine, enjoys nearly 300 days of sunshine each year. The City, seat of Klamath County, has a population of approximately 19,000 within the City limits and an additional 25,000+ population in the surrounding urban growth boundary.
Klamath Falls was formed in 1882 as the town of Linkville and was platted along a short river that linked the lakes now known as Klamath Lake and Lake Ewauna. It was this river where the falls were located that Klamath Falls was named after in 1893. The falls have since disappeared under water due to damning of this short river.
Upper Klamath Lake which covers 133 square miles, is the largest body of fresh water in the Pacific Northwest. Klamath County has more than 82 lakes and streams and is the home of Crater Lake National Park, the deepest fresh water lake in the United States and the 7th deepest in the world. There are more than 150,000 acres of wildlife refuges that are set aside primarily for water fowl which makes for some of the best bird watching, and also one of the largest populations of Bald Eagles, in the U.S. The Running Y Resort has the only Arnold Palmer designed golf course in Oregon and Klamath County has 4 other golf courses to enjoy. Other recreational opportunities are served through the Ross Ragland Theater, the Linkville Playhouse, the Klamath County Fairgrounds and the KLA-MOY-YA casino.
Oregon Institute of Technology and Klamath Community College are located in the city. Elementary and secondary students are served by Klamath City School District and Klamath County School District. City and County schools include twelve elementary, three junior high and three senior high schools. Air travel to/from the county is through the Klamath Falls International Airport.
Klamath County is served by the Merle West Medical Center, a 176 bed health care facility. Merle West Medical Center began a $40 Million, 100,000-square-foot modernization in spring 2005. The project will include 50 private rooms, 17 semi-private rooms, plus additional space for 35 patients whose visits will be less than one day. The local news is delivered daily by The Herald and News. Larger stores located in Klamath Falls include Gottchalks, Home Depot, Ross Dress for Less, Walmart Super Center, Fred Meyer, Big K-Mart, and Bi-Mart. In addition, there are many locally-owned smaller businesses which offer unique and specialized shopping.
